If you are currently losing hair, you’re probably familiar with different topicals like minoxidil, or hairloss shampoo, and the list goes on. The effectiveness of these can vary but it’s good to stay on top of new hair growth products. The latest therapy that has seen some good results is something called PRP therapy. It’s short for Platelet Rich Plasma therapy and could help in promoting hair growth. But this is not therapy alone is not new. It was originally used back in the 1970s for injured athletes. Since then, health experts have found other benefits from using PRP therapy, and this includes hair loss. Take note that this is not a magic potion that can magically regrow your hair. However, it could be highly effective for certain people, most especially when used with Propecia and Rogaine (minoxidil).

PRP Therapy Overview

When we talk about PRP Therapy, we are talking about a series of injections of platelet-rich plasma occurring, and these injections are taken from your own blood. Platelets are cell fragments that are important for blood clotting. On the other hand, plasma is a yellowish liquid that makes up around half of an individual’s blood volume.

This platelet-rich plasma has proteins that could promote the growth of tissue. Now, when you inject these into your scalp, it may trigger hair growth. It is important to remember that your hair follicles do not die when you lose your hair. The ultimate goal is to reactivate them. With PRP, it’s another way of attempting to wake the hair follicles up.

How Does the Procedure Work?

During your session, we will take around 1 or 2 ounces of blood by placing a needle in your arm. From here, the doctor will process the blood to separate the plasma. It will then be injected in different areas on your scalp, and would take around 20 injections every session. The doctor will numb the area first so you won’t feel a thing.

How Many Treatments are Needed?

PRP therapy for hair might take three sessions and will be done eight weeks apart. You will see hair growth in just four to six weeks. But you have to remember that this is not a permanent solution, and you need to have it maintained after 6 to 12 months.

The Risks of PRP Therapy

The procedure is generally safe as you use your own plasma. Some of the other risks are injury to the blood vessels and development of scar tissue. To minimize the risk, it’s critical that you choose a credible facility like NuVo Aesthetics to do the therapy.
